Bisping to Take on Any Opponent

Michael Bisping, the biggest British name in the UFC, will now face Canadian submission expert Jason Day at the UFC 85 super show at London's O2 Arena, June 7.

Middleweight striker Michael Bisping is ready for any opponent.

Middleweight striker Bisping was due to face Chris Leben, but on Thursday the American was handed a 35-day prison term for violating the terms of a 2005 probation order. Leben was expected to be fined for no-showing several mandated drink education classes three years ago but, instead, he was sentenced to 35 days in jail by Clackamas County Circuit Court in Oregon.

Bisping, 16-1, told me on Friday evening: "Obviously I had heard about Chris's legal issues and knew there was a chance the court would want to make an example of him. I know he must be gutted to miss out on this fight, as am I, but I've already switched my focus to Jason Day.

"Day has looked very impressive in his last few fights, I think he's lost just once in his last 11, and he seems just as good with his strikes as he is with his submissions. He looks a very well rounded and powerful fighter, this is no less dangerous a fight than Leben was going to be.

"But I am a fighter and I will fight whoever the UFC puts in front of me. I wouldn't care if the opponent changes 50 times, I can't wait to get in front of 20,000 British fans in London and do the business."

The UFC had hoped Leben, a much loved character who has long since given up drinking and is in the form of his career as a result, would still be available to fight in London but had a back-up plan in Day.

"DoomsDay" is a 6ft powerhouse with a 17-5 record in mixed martial arts. Like Bisping, he last fought April 19 in Montreal, Canada, and, like Bisping, he scored an impressive first round TKO. Day beat UFC veteran Alan Belcher in one round with strikes.

Despite having only 29 days' notice, Day accepted the London fight immediately.

He said: "I love this fight for me.  Everybody's been asking me who would I like to fight next, and I said Bisping, but who would have thought it would have come about so quickly?

"He's a great fighter, an exciting fighter, tough as nails, and everybody wants that marquee fight where you get the guy that tests you and you slug it out for two or three rounds. I think he's a great test for me.

"I've never been to England.  My first UFC fight I got to stay at home in Canada, and now I'm traveling to the UK, so it will be the complete opposite, but I'm excited."
