Middleweight jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia couldn't finish off Dan Miller, but he did enough to walk away with the unanimous decision on Saturday at UFC 109 in Las Vegas. One judge scored it 30-27, while the other two had it 29-28, all in favor of Maia, who received the first decision victory of his career. Maia (12-1) bounced back after a quick loss in August to Nate Marquardt. Miller (11-3) has now lost two in a row. Miller clearly wanted to keep the fight standing to avoid Maia's elite submission game, but Maia was actually the aggressor on the feet for long stretches, moving forward to land light blows while not leaving many openings for counter strikes. Maia took down Miller briefly in the first round, but not until the third round did Maia plant Miller and keep him there. Although Maia never found a good opening for a submission, he kept Miller on the mat for the last few minutes of the contest.
