MANNY PACQUIAO is set to receive his biggest paycheck in his career when he fights Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico on March 15 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Without mentioning any figure, Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal said the purse will dwarf the $ 4 million the Filipino received when he fought Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico last Oct. 6 in Las Vegas. "This will be the biggest purse for Manny simply because we are expecting more pay-per-view buys in this fight. This is a world title fight," Gacal said yesterday. "What we are expecting is a big jump in the pay-per-view revenue." Based on estimates, Pacquiao could fetch as high as $ 2.45 million alone in pay-per-view buys alone. "Bob Arum said he is looking at 500,000 buys (at $ 49.95 each) and we think that is achievable," Gacal said. Gacal declined to say how much Pacquiao will get for his fight against Marquez. Breaking into the 500,000 barrier doesn’t seem to be as difficult as it looks since Pacquiao is a certified box-office draw, having grossed in the vicinity of 350,000 to 400,000 buys in his high-profile fights with Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. Apart from the guaranteed purse and share in the pay-per-view sales, Pacquiao is also cashing in on the sale of the television rights for Philippine consumption. "Manny is happy and satisfied with the deal with Solar Sports (in relation to the TV rights for the Philippines)," added Gacal. In Pacquiao’s last fight – a 12-round decision win over Barrera in Las Vegas last Oct. 6 – Pacquiao was guaranteed million. He also got additional income from the pay-per-view sales and the purchase of the TV rights by Solar Sports that industry sources disclosed was worth over million. Pacquiao’s purse began to skyrocket when he fought and lost to Morales for the first time in March 2005 when he got $ 1.750 million. Instead of receiving less in the rematch that he won in stunning fashion, Pacquiao got $ 2 million and in the third fight that he won convincingly in three rounds, the 29-year-old GenSan heavy hitter collected $ 3 million. Interestingly, when Pacquiao made his US debut in June 2001 — as a last-minute replacement — he took less than $ 40,000 since he also had to pay his business manager and trainers. As Pacquiao rapidly made his way to the top, so did his paycheck and additional sources of income. In the past few years, Pacquiao has signed huge endorsement deals with top corporations such as San Miguel Corporation and Nike. And in the event Pacquiao disposes of Marquez, Wakee Salud, a close ally of Pacquiao believes "there’ll be no stopping Pacquiao from having a breakthrough 2008." "If Manny stays focused and determined as he has been showing the past week, I don’t see any reason why he won’t beat Marquez and do the same with (World Boxing Council) lightweight champion David Diaz (in June) and Ricky Hatton (in November)." Salud said Pacquiao is in right on track in his training for Marquez. "Once he reports for training at the Wild Card, he will have eight solid weeks of training and that’s enough to beat Marquez," added Salud.
